Rubber rainwear becomes popular, with its raglan-style sleeves (without shoulder seams), close-fitting necklines and variety of colours. But as yet, there is nobody in the Netherlands who can master the complicated adhesive technique. The enterprising Jaques Kattenburg, son of a tailoring family, sees opportunities in this and makes his way to the English city of Manchester, the cradle of rubber rainwear, in order to perfect his knowledge of this speciality. And he succeeds – in fact, amazingly quickly.
